The Great Balloon Release

On Saturday morning, April 30th, a group of homeschooling families met at Kenneth Bernard Park in Lansing, Kansas.  17 kids and 10 adults released fifty helium balloons into the air with a card attached asking the finder to email us and tell us when and where they found the card.  We wanted to track the distance an average helium balloon will travel when released.   There is a video of the release below.  We will update the map at the bottom of this page as we receive responses.  Check back soon!

The Great Homeschool Balloon Release

Hey, homeschoolers!
Have you ever lost a helium balloon?    You accidentally let go of the string while outside, only to watch helplessly as it floated away?  Did you wonder where it went?  Now is your chance to find out!  On Saturday, April 30, 2011, at 8:00 a.m., we’re going to release fifty helium balloons into the air at Lansing’s Bernard Park for the sole purpose of tracking how far they travel, and where they land.  Attached to the balloon will be a card containing the email address for this website, with a request for the finder to send us a message telling where and when they found their balloon.  We’ll mark that location on the map below for everyone to see.
What do we need from you?  Half an hour of your time and a smile.  Lansing homeschoolers Richard and Melissa Barrette will provide a 9” balloon, helium, a string, and the note.   What could be easier?   In order to have enough helium to go around, we will not be able to fill larger balloons than the ones we provide.   If you want to use a special balloon, or a balloon larger than 9”, please bring your own helium-filled balloon that morning.
Either way, please join us on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at 8:00 a.m. at Lansing’s Bernard Park.  We’ll fill the balloons, attach the notes, take a group picture, and video the balloon release.  Then all you have to do to find out where your balloon travelled is visit this blog and wait for the results.
Are you in?
Please R.S.V.P. to our email address whereismyballoon@live.com and let us know how many kids will be joining us. We want to make sure we have enough balloons for everyone!
Rain Date:  If it rains, we’ll hold the balloon release on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 8:00 a.m. at Lansing’s Bernard Park.
Directions: Bernard Park is located on 4-H Road about two miles west of Main Street/K-7 on the north side of the road.
